Windows 7 installation takes long time
I turned off system restore, and my PC is running sweet now! Prior to this, clean install Win7 x64 HP, works fine, fully update windows, problem appears after updating.
So I reformatted, and it did the same thing again after updating windows, so I turned off "system restore" and it installs programs that wouldn't install before 3dmark 06 and others now install at speed. I guess it creates a system restore point before installing, basically saving every changed file in the past day. I know that this is an old thread, but I am having the same issue. I've installed win8 updates and antivirus, now I'm installing the audio card driver and application sw: the installation is taking hours.

Windows 7 Performance. Sign in to vote. I am trying to install, my application on windows 7 it takes a long time, in other versions of windows it takes hardly 3 minutes but on windows 7 it takes more than 10 minutes, same is happening for uninstallation also.
Does anyone has any idea regarding this?? Wednesday, October 7, AM. Thursday, October 8, AM. Anyways, will try the options that you have suggested and will get back to you. But in general i wanted to know, is windows 7 having any performace issues related to installation or de-installation of applications?? Thanks for your quick response. I have analysed one more thing, same product installation goes through normally on windows 7 x86, but it takes a long time only for windows 7 x64, so could this be issue related to x64 architecture of windows 7 rather the application which is getting installed??
That's not absolutely, Windows 7 x86 and Windows 7 x64 adopt different architectures. Generally, Windows 7 x64 supports large memory size compared with Windows 7 x Currently most applications support Windows 7 x64 as well as Windows 7 x Windows 7 x64 uses Bit Windows Installer to get packages for 64 bit applications.
While Windows 7 x86 uses 32 bit Windows Installaer to install 32 bit applications. The 32 bit application may be different from the 64 bit application. For more references, please refer to 32 bit VS 64 bit.
In my opinion, if it is the case as you mentioned above, the main reason might be due to application compatibility. Moreover, have you tested on other available Windows 7 x64 computer? Computers that well support Windows 7 x64 shouldn't have this kind of performance. Your computer may better support x86 Windows other than x64 Windows. What is the hardware specfication of your computer? I kindly recommend you to install Windows 7 x86 if your computer is originally designed for 32bit Windows.
BTW, I would like to note down your concern and see if any other community user comes across the similar issue. I will right back to reply and let you know as soon as I get more information.
Friday, October 9, AM. I have the same problem, sometimes installing an application from msi files takes more than 10 minutes just to open the file.
It is dependend of the file size so I think it is some kind of security check. After the file opens and the installation wizard actually starts taking over, the installation is done in seconds. I haven't tried so far but switching off user account control may resolve the problem.

Then I found your tip — installed the remaining 3 updates, rebooted after each download and install, and NOW Windows Update took 6 mins to find somewhat 30 new updates! Has anyone encountered the problem of the install for KB and KB failing after trying to install? I spent 6 months trying to solve this issue with windows update. Can you list the updates, in order that need to be installed?

Installed and worked fine till SP1 and then stopped and hung up like others report. Downloaded the five files above and installed them and everything works as should. This forces the windows installer to install these files instead of searching updates. I wanted to say Thanks to Mark and Ranger! I have used the — 1: KB and 2: KB in the past and they have worked great for me.
I recently tried to use the first 2 as i have in the past with NO success. After a little research i came across this post and realized i forgot to disable the automatic updates and disconnect from the internet, so i disabled auto updates and disconnected from internet then rebooted and tried again, they both then installed very quickly as they have in the past. I reconnected to the net and checked for updates, in a matter of a few minutes it found ! Thanks for all your help!
Prior to discovering this site, I spent 2 days fruitlessly trying different options to install Windows 7 updates. That was until I stumbled upon this site. Thanks Martin Brinkmann, Vandal and Ranger. Keep up the good work! Please note the nuance that Ranger points out.

No more, no less. If will upload TB of data to MS. MS is driving us all to Win10 with this trick…………. Ever since the Win8 fiasco, my contempt for Microsoft know only one direction: up. Satya Nadella states that this is the future of Microsoft. Get used to it. Go figure!!! Users have been aware of it for close on a year. Why has it taken so long to call them out. Time consuming but really rewarding, realible systems and peace of mind. Why all this caution?
Pretty a bad situation this one…. Why should you update Win7? Until the cumulative updates began, I checked the updates individually every patch Tuesday. Because I have excellent anti virus, anti malware, anti file locking software installed , I have not had any dodgy software on my Laptop, not even PUPs. All the security software is updated automatically every day.
Nadella does because the Win 10 installs are way down on the predicted figures and MS will do anything to improve them. I gave up. Switched updates off entirely. I will not be bullied by Microsoft.
