Applicants with criminal backgrounds are advised to provide complete documentation. Once a candidate has submitted a completed application for licensure, he or she may provisionally practice massage therapy in Virginia up to 90 days with written authorization from the Board. If the licensure exam is failed, the candidate may not continue provisional practice until the exam is retaken and passed. An individual who is or has been licensed in another U.
If the out-of-state massage therapist has a lapsed credential, he or she must be eligible for reinstatement. Endorsement requirements are described in 18VAC of state code dhp. The Virginia Board will require credential verification. Massage therapists who have held credentialing in foreign nations can be certified by examination in Virginia if they are judged to have met equivalent educational requirements.
Virginia massage therapists whose credentials have lasped for more than one renewal period will need to apply for reinstatement. Applicants for reinstatement will need to verify that they have met continue competency requirements. Reinstatement forms are available on the Board of Nursing website dhp.

Evidence that you have completed the competency requirements in 18VAC of the Virginia Regulations Governing the Licensure of Massage Therapist during the period in which the license has been lapsed.

The board shall periodically conduct a random audit of licensees to determine compliance. The persons selected for the audit shall provide evidence of current NCBTMB certification or the completed continued competency form provided by the board and all supporting documentation within 30 days of receiving notification of the audit.
Failure to comply with these requirements may subject the massage therapist to disciplinary action by the board. The board may grant an extension of the deadline for continuing competency requirements, for up to one year, for good cause shown upon a written request from the licensee prior to the renewal date. The board may grant an exemption for all or part of the requirements for circumstances beyond the control of the licensee, such as temporary disability, mandatory military service, or officially declared disasters.
